Why Counseling? Series Part 2: Why Counseling is a Good Idea

Welcome to part TWO of a three part series Encounter Counseling is doing called "Why Counseling?"  In part 1 of this series we talked about 5 counseling misconceptions that hopefully helped dispel a few of the myths you had about counseling - you can find that post here.  Today we are going to talk about 4 reasons why counseling a good idea.  You can find part 3 of the series here titled: What to expect during the counseling process.  Lets get started!

1. Counseling gives YOU a different perspective.  I think it takes a lot of bravery to go to counseling.  As a counselor I have had the privilege and opportunity to be in the client's chair on several occasions and it's an experience that can be tough, but so rewarding. Counseling provides you with the opportunity to get a different perspective on your story and struggles.  At Encounter Counseling Center we strive to provide high-quality, strengths-based supportive counseling where empathy and a desire to understand your feelings and perspective comes first, and we believe this brings about a deeper self-reflective process leading to lasting change.

2. Counseling helps YOU get unstuck.  Do you ever find yourself in the same situation regardless of the circumstances time and time again??  Maybe you're struggling to keep relationships, or repeating the same cycle of conflict with your spouse or you're struggling to keep a job.  Whatever the situation counseling can help you get unstuck.  Counselors are NOT trained to give advice, but are trained to understand, listen, give empathy and compassion and ask questions to help the client further explore their thoughts, behaviors and emotions regarding different scenarios and situations.  This can help you get unstuck and find the answers and success you might be looking for in a certain area of life.

3. Counseling is REALLY healthy for you.  I believe counseling is for everyone because it makes you healthier, happier, more emotionally in-tune and self-aware person.  Whether you are going to counseling for relationship struggles, depression, family or career issues or anything that may seem big or small studies have shown it is a client's relationship with the counselor that brings about the most change.  The counseling process is vulnerable and can be difficult, but with it comes the change you are looking for in your life or relationship.

4. Counseling can help you HEAL and OVERCOME. Do you have stuff in your past, maybe trauma, hurt or abandonment that keeps coming up in your life and holding you back?  Really who doesn't? We unfortunately all have experienced pain or loss and sometimes these events can feel like huge emotional hurdles to living the lives we want.  Counseling can help you find the healing you're are looking for and better yet use that healing as a growing edge providing you with the opportunity to thrive.

I hope these four points give you a better understanding of counseling, why it's necessary and a good idea.  It's a new year and the perfect time to give counseling a try and work towards some of those awesome New Year's resolutions you set.  Well, you don't have to do it alone.  Give us a call, we can help.

I hope your new year is filled with peace and happiness!

Warmly,

Chelsea
